Here at Grand Parkway Smiles we offer an array of treatments and options, and one of the ones to consider are Zygomatic Implants. You may be wondering what they are, what is involved and a little about who might be the perfect candidate to consider the treatment. This article will help to answer all of the questions that you may have about zygomatic implants.

Zygomatic Dental Implants Cost

The Typical Cost for Zygomatic Dental Implants and hybrid denture per arch is $35,999. This is for 1 arch which is the maxillary arch and includes both the Zygomatic Dental Implants and one hybrid denture.

What are zygomatic dental implants

If you have considered dental implants before but you don’t have the bone you need for more traditional dental implants then you may consider Zygomatic implants as an alternative. Zygomatic implants are an implant that will engage the very strong bulk of bone that forms the cheekbone. These implants can be seen as an alternative if you don’t have much bone in the upper jaw area for other implants to work. Some dental implants require complex bone grafting operations, whereas zygomatic implants make it possible for the procedure to happen quicker.

Traditionally, dental implants can take as long as 12 months to complete, whereas these longer implants make grafting unnecessary and some patients have had treatments completed in as little as a day. Some people have complained that normal dentures and implant treatments can often mean there is an issue with facial structure whereas the zygomatic implants corrects this loss and can have a rejuvenating effect to the appearance of the face.

What is the procedure?

While it may sound like a great treatment to consider, it does mean that you need a specialist to ensure that the procedure goes to plan. Dr. Ryan Smart is our dedicated Oral Maxillofacial surgeon who will be able to perform the surgery.  This procedure is carried out by our highly skilled oral maxillofacial surgeon. They are a-listed in zygoma implant surgery for patients with bone loss, using these specially designed zygomatic implants. In cases where bone grafts in the jawbone wouldn’t be suitable, zygomatic implants might be the only solution. Likewise, if a bone graft has proven unsuccessful, zygomatic implants might be the only way to secure denture implants.

What to expect from your first appointment?

You may feel nervous when it comes to your first appointment, but generally this will normally be a talk through to ensure that you feel happy with the procedure itself. There may be things you want to ask, and your oral maxillofacial surgeon will also want to inspect the mouth area. Once you are happy and have any questions answered then you can expect to make a follow up appointment for the treatment to go ahead. In the meantime, if you have any further questions you can contact us directly. For the main appointment, you will need to think about getting home safely afterwards, so it would be advised to arrange that with somebody.

What is the recovery time?

The recovery time for zygomatic dental implants can vary from patient to patient. But there is a general recovery process that you may find that you follow. It is important to expect some bruising, tenderness, weakness in the mouth and swelling.

Initially after the surgery you will likely feel some mild discomfort. Especially as you recover from the sedation and anaesthesia. It is a good idea to keep ice on your face and jaw for the next few days as this can help with healing time. You are likely to be pain free from the procedure and as you progress on with a few days by about day 5 you should feel fine.  You may find that you need to modify your life, diet and the way you are for approximately 8-10 months. However, recovery can vary from patient to patient.

Who is a candidate?

You may be wondering whether or not you would be an ideal candidate for zygomatic implants. Patients who do not have enough bone structure that would be required for traditional implants tend to be a candidate for this specialist procedure. Our oral maxillofacial surgeon would be best to advise whether or not you would be, but if you have already been turned down for standard and more traditional implant methods then this could be an indication that zygomatic implants would be the one for you. Our surgeon will examine and evaluate the mouth and bone structure on your appointment and will advise the best procedure for you to consider. Zygomatic Dental Implants is an ideal alternative process for traditional implants since it does not require augmentation and grafting which contributes to a comfortable and shorter treatment.

How long will the procedure take?

Initially we will aim to get through the first major part of the treatment within one day. This is where your temporary bridge will be fitted. So you don’t have to go through any period of time without any teeth. However, your total treatment time, which includes time to heal and to allow the permanent bridge to be fitted can take anything from 6-8 months. Again this will be discussed with you at your initial appointment so that you are fully aware of what to expect.
