Oral/Dental Health is Critically Important to Your Overall Health

Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that having healthy teeth and a healthy mouth are vital for general health. When a person has, for example, a condition like gingivitis (bleeding gums), this is an infection which, if left untreated, can eventually affect your heart. Having healthy teeth and general oral health is critical to being an overall healthy person.

The maintenance of good oral and dental health involves systematic dental exams, (every 6 months is recommended), in depth professional cleanings performed by a qualified dental hygienists, whole mouth X-rays to identify any cavities, incipient gum disease, bone loss, loose teeth and a host of other problems.

Just as periodic physical exams by a qualified dentist are recommended to detect any incipient physical problems, everyone needs to do the same for your oral and dental health.

People often postpone or even try to avoid seeing a dentist because of the cost. Today, dental financing is readily available, with terms and interest rates which are quite reasonable. This financing is available not only for major dental procedures, but for preventive dentistry, including a wide variety of routine dental care. No one should postpone seeing a dentist because of concern for cost. Your health is important! You can obtain financing for most all dental needs and conditions you might encounter.

Are you among the 100 million that fail to see a dentist each year?

Preventive dental care is usually relatively simple and can prevent most dental disease. Good oral hygiene and regular visits to a dentist every year can prevent most dental problems. A twice per year dental checkup can detect and prevent more serious problems from developing.

Dental Teeth Cleaning by a Qualified Dental Technician

Professional cleaning every six months is usually sufficient to keep your teeth in good shape and provide the opportunity to detect an incipient problem in order to prevent it from becoming more serious and costly. Some other physical and medical problems are often identified in the early stages by dental technicians in cooperation with the dentist.

People with more serious dental health problems such as periodontitis (bleeding and receding gums) may require more frequent cleanings and, in severe cases deep scaling and service.

The First Step

The first step is to schedule a visit with Grand Parkway Smiles, to get an overall examination from a highly qualified dentist. The dentist will often begin by asking you to fill out a questionnaire that will cover your dental history. The dentist will then usually proceed to conduct a low dose X-ray of your entire mouth, using the latest in super-safe X-ray equipment.

The dentist will then visually inspect all of your teeth, often using specialized dental instruments to check for gum disease.

The dentist will often evaluate you dental health and screen for oral cancer. This is accomplished by asking you to extend your tongue and holding your tongue with gauze, checking out your tongue as well as all parts of your mouth. The dentist will often feel your neck and your jaw for any problem area of early warning signs.

If you have not had a dental appointment in some time, the dentist may recommend that you begin with a dental cleaning by a qualified dental hygienist.

At the conclusion of that initial visit, you will receive a comprehensive treatment plan that will spell out exactly what you need to achieve optimum oral health and restore your teeth to optimum condition. That comprehensive treatment plan will include your financing options.

After finishing this first and any recommended initial visits, you should consider establishing a permanent relationship with the dentist to maintain continuity of care and to produce optimum oral and dental health.

Establishing a Long-Term Relationship with a Dentist

Once you have your mouth and your teeth in good shape, it is important to keep them that way. A regular, long-term relationship with a dentist who gets to know you and your teeth is critical to keep them that way.

Regular visits with a dentist establish continuity and enables your dentist to detect changes and any early warning signals that require attention. The dentist can compare your present condition with previous visits and help you to keep your mouth and teeth in excellent condition.
