What to Expect After Oral Surgery: Healing Tips & Timeline

After your oral surgery whether it’s wisdom teeth removal or dental implant placement it’s natural to have questions about the healing process. At our Katy dental office, we want you to feel fully supported and informed during your recovery. Understanding what to expect and how to care for yourself will help you heal comfortably and confidently.

In the first few days after surgery, it’s common to experience swelling, some discomfort, and mild bleeding. These are normal parts of healing. We recommend resting as much as possible and keeping your head elevated to reduce swelling. Using ice packs on your cheek in short intervals during the first 24 hours can also provide relief. Pain management is important, so take any prescribed or over-the-counter medication exactly as directed by your dental team. If you notice bleeding, gently biting down on gauze pads helps control it. Should the bleeding continue longer than expected, please contact our office.

During this initial period, your diet should consist of soft, cool, or room-temperature foods such as yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, or soup. Avoid hot, spicy, or crunchy foods, as they can irritate the surgical site or become trapped in the healing tissue. Proper oral hygiene is essential to prevent infection, though you should avoid brushing directly near the surgical area on the first day. Starting on the second day, gentle rinsing with warm salt water after meals supports an optimal healing environment. Continue to brush and floss the rest of your mouth carefully, using a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Between days four and seven, swelling generally begins to diminish and discomfort eases. You can maintain your saltwater rinses two to three times daily and carefully brush around the surgery site. At this stage, you can gradually introduce a wider variety of soft foods but should still avoid anything hard or sticky that could disrupt the healing tissue.

After about a week, most patients feel significantly better, though some tenderness may persist. If non-dissolvable stitches were placed, you might return to our office for their removal. By this time, you can typically resume most daily activities and begin returning to your regular diet with caution, always paying attention to any signs of sensitivity or discomfort.

It is important to reach out to us if you experience any unusual symptoms during your recovery. Excessive or prolonged bleeding beyond 24 hours, severe pain that doesn’t respond to medication, signs of infection such as increased swelling, redness, warmth, or discharge, persistent numbness, or difficulty breathing or swallowing should be addressed promptly. These symptoms are uncommon but require professional evaluation to ensure your recovery stays on track.
